I also got very excited about that since I recently started to work with fpga's. But it seems that that's already an old field of research in CS. And that fpga was already applied to lattice qcd: just google the words "callanan qcd thesis fpga". It's a whole thesis on the subject! From 2006. Quite interesting and full of details. They've got a pretty reasonable speed up.
